INFO: SRT's 2-2.5 hour stage performance incorporates high energy music, special effects, fast-paced video, personal testimonies, and comedy all delivered in a concert-style approach with which teenagers can respond and relate. The program also presents an evangelistic message focused on forgiveness and second chances with a challenge to start over from past mistakes.  Students who make a commitment to purity may purchase a silver ring as a symbol and reminder of their decision. After each event, students who make this commitment are followed-up by SRT staff with emails and text messages that encourage and equip them in their commitment. This event is designed for teenagers but is also relevant to college and young adult ages. A parent's session is also held at each event to educate parents about what is happening in today's youth culture and how they can encourage and support their child's commitment to remain pure.

Saying No to Temptation:

*Christ resisted the temptation of the devil.

Matthew 4:1-4, 8-11

1Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.  2And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.  3And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.  4But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

8Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;  9And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.  10Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. 11Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

Do you ever find that sometimes you give in to something you never thought you'd give in to?

It seems once you have given in, it is harder to say 'no' the next time as well.

That is how temptation to sin gets the better of us.  Once you give in, it makes it that much easier to commit the sin again.  Giving in also lets the devil know that you are an easy target and that if he is persistent you might let him lead you astray again.  Take strength in knowing that Christ is on your side and that He resisted sin.

Christ defeated the devil with scripture.  When you find you face temptation that seems stronger than you, let Christ be your strenght and turn to God's Word for you guidance and protection.

Why does giving into temptation once make it easy to do it again?

What is a temptation that you struggle with?

How can you better resist temptation?

FEBRUARY 07, 2010:

God's Spotlight on Sin:

*As a child of Christ, you are now in the light of the Lord.

~Ephesians 5:8-14 (New International Version)

8For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9(for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10and find out what pleases the Lord. 11Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, 14for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said:  "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you."

The closer you draw to God, the more you are able to resist sin and the more able you are to be in the light.  Think of God's light as a flashlight on sin, which makes sense out of darkness and reveals how evil sin is.  Sometimes when the choices in your life get really confusing, the only way to see the right path is through God's light.

Take staying sexually pure, for example.  It's going to be a huge challenge for you to resist sexual sin without God's grace!  When you draw closer to God, through Bible study, prayer and Christian fellowship you will have more strength to resist temptation.  This does not mean that temptation will disappear but being closer to God will help you to think more like God, and therefore stay more pure.

Remember:  Nothing is hidden from the eyes of the Lord.

Hebrews 4:13

13Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

We are given the 'armor of light' (see vs 12 below) to help protect us from the desires of our flesh.

Romans 11:12-14

12The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. 13Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. 14Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature.

How does being close to God help you stay away from sin?

Wat is one way you can draw closer to God today?

Write a brief prayer to God about some temptation that you are struggling with:

A verse to remember:  Psalms 61:8 "Then will I ever sing praise to your name and fulfill my vows day after day."

JANUARY 10 TSA:

IF YOU MADE AN ABSTINENCE PLEDGE YOU NEED TO ALSO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE AN "ACCOUNTABILITY" PARTNER.  THIS SHOULD BE SOMEONE YOU TRUST TO HELP YOU STAY FOCUSSED ON WHAT GOD WOULD DESIRE FOR YOU IN THIS AREA OF YOUR LIFE.

EVEN PETER, ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT LEADERS OF THE EARLY CHURCH NEEED SOMEONETO KEEP HIM ACCOUNTABLE.

YOU AND YOUR ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER NEED TO COMMUNICATE ON A REGULAR BASIS.  NEVER JUST ASSUME THAT THE PROMISES MADE ARE BEING UPHELD.

PURITY IS A COMMITMENT THAT CAN EASILY BE CHALLENGED WITH THE CULTURE THAT SURROUNDS US.  EACH STUDENT WILL HAVE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF SELF CONTROL, BUT IF THERE IS SOMEONE ELSE TO TURN TO IN THOSE DIFFICULT TIMES, THE TWO TOGETHER CAN JOIN IN PRAYER AND DISCUSSION OF WAYS TO AVOID THE TEMPTATION TO 'GIVE IN'.

AS AN ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER, YOU MUST ALSO TAKE THE POSITION WITH THE RESPONSIBILITY IT REQUIRES.  LOOK OUT FOR SIGNS THAT RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN YOUR 'ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER' AND OTHERS MAY BE ENTERING DANGEROUS TERRITORY.  IF SO, DON'T WAIT TIL THINGS ESCALATE, POINT IT OUT TO RAISE THEIR AWARENESS BUT DO IT IN A MANNER THAT IS OUT OF CONCERN AND LOVE.

NEVER JUDGE, NEVER LOOK DOWN ON, AND NEVER PRESENT YOUR PERSPECTIVE IN A MANNER THAT FOSTERS GUILT.

IF YOU SEE THINGS THAT CONCERN YOU AND YOU DO NOT BRING THEM TO THE OTHER PERSON'S ATTENTION, THEN IT MAY APPEAR AS IF YOU SUPPORT THE BEHAVIOR OR THAT IT IS APPROPRIATE WHEN YOU KNOW IT IS NOT.

****REMEMBER:  MOST IMPORTANTLY:  BE A FRIEND!  A FRIEND WOULD WARN SOMEONE OF DANGER.
*****ALSO REMEMBER:  YOU HAVE TO BE WILLING TO ACCEPT THE SAME HELP FROM THOSE WHO ARE YOUR FRIENDS AS WELL, ESPECIALLY YOUR ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER.  THEY ARE ONLY FULFILLING THEIR PLEDGE.

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE AN ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER, NOW IS THE TIME TO GET ONE!

AN ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER CAN NOT BE YOUR BOYFRIEND (FOR GIRLS) OR YOUR GIRLFRIEND (FOR BOYS)!

AN ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER MUST BE SOMEONE YOU TRUST.

AN ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER SHOULD NEVER SHARE PERSONAL INFORORMATION WITH ANYONE ELSE.

IT IS HELPFUL TO ESTABLISH A REGULAR CONVERSATION ABOUT THIS AREA OF YOUR LIFE SO IT DOES NOT BECOME AWKWARD IF YOU DO HAVE TO ADDRESS SOME ISSUES THAT WOULD BE UNCOMFORTABLE.

GALATIANS 2:9-16:  PETER IS REMINDED
9James, Peter and John, those reputed to be pillars, gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship when they recognized the grace given to me. They agreed that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the Jews. 10All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do.
Paul Opposes Peter
11When Peter came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he was clearly in the wrong. 12Before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself from the Gentiles because he was afraid of those who belonged to the circumcision group. 13The other Jews joined him in his hypocrisy, so that by their hypocrisy even Barnabas was led astray.

14When I saw that they were not acting in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter in front of them all, "You are a Jew, yet you live like a Gentile and not like a Jew. How is it, then, that you force Gentiles to follow Jewish customs?

15"We who are Jews by birth and not 'Gentile sinners' 16know that a man is not justified by observing the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by observing the law, because by observing the law no one will be justified.

THE SCRIPTURE REFERENCED ABOVE SHOWS US HOW PAUL HAD TO CONFRONT PETER WITH SOME THINGS THAT HE KNEW WERE NOT ACCORDING TO THE GOSPEL.  PAUL WAS VERY COURAGEOUS IN MAKING A STAND FOR THE MINISTRY.  HE DID NOT APPROACH PETER WITH JUDGEMENT BUT HE APPROACHED HIM WITH TRUTH.  THE CHURCH IN ANTIOCH WAS IN CONFLICT.

IN VERSE 9 (9James, Peter and John, those reputed to be pillars, gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship when they recognized the grace given to me. They agreed that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the Jews.) IT SPEAKS OF THE RIGHT HAND OF FELLOWSHIP, BY VERSE 11 THE CONFLICT IS EVIDENT: (11When Peter came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he was clearly in the wrong. 12Before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself from the Gentiles because he was afraid of those who belonged to the circumcision group. 13The other Jews joined him in his hypocrisy, so that by their hypocrisy even Barnabas was led astray)VERSES 14-21 GIVES US A LOOK AT HOW PAUL RESPONDED TO PETER: 14When I saw that they were not acting in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter in front of them all, "You are a Jew, yet you live like a Gentile and not like a Jew. How is it, then, that you force Gentiles to follow Jewish customs?  15"We who are Jews by birth and not 'Gentile sinners' 16know that a man is not justified by observing the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by observing the law, because by observing the law no one will be justified.17"If, while we seek to be justified in Christ, it becomes evident that we ourselves are sinners, does that mean that Christ promotes sin? Absolutely not! 18If I rebuild what I destroyed, I prove that I am a lawbreaker. 19For through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God. 20I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 21I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!

**READ THE SCRIPTURE ABOVE AGAIN:  PAUL CONFRONTED PETER WITH TRUTH.  HE REMINDED HIM OF HIS COMMITMENT TO LIVE ACCORDING TO THE NEW COVENANT BROUGHT WITH JESUS.  PETER HAD TO MAKE SURE HE DIDN'T FALL INTO THE OLD WAY OF THINKING THAT HIS LIFE IS GOVERNED BY 'LAW' THROUGH LEGALISM.

WHEN WE HAVE SEEN GOD'S WISHES FOR US TO HAVE A LIFE OF PURITY UNTIL MARRIAGE, IT IS UP TO US TO ABIDE BY THOSE WISHES IN OBEDIENCE.  GOD GIVES US GODLY PEOPLE IN OUR LIVES TO HELP US REMEMBER HIS COMMANDMENTS.

JUST LIKE PETER KNEW THE GOSPEL.  HE KNEW THAT JESUS DIED ON THE CROSS FOR OUR SINS.  HE KNEW THAT THE PEOPLE NEEDED TO HEAR THE GOSPEL, YET HE REVERTED TO HIS OLD WAY OF THINKING AND NEEDED PAUL TO REMIND HIM OF WHAT HE ALREADY KNEW.
